The Hidden Forest
John White
It was a cold dark winter evening,
A soft blanket of snow covered the mountains and fields,
And snow glimmered in the faint moonlight,
The only noise was the light breeze, creeping among the trees
The only sensation that could be felt was the cold winter freeze,
The tall trees stood lifeless like frozen statues,
No clouds in the sky the starlight twinkled,
No signs of life for all the animals were hidden in their lairs,
The vast landscape stands untouched by man.
A blank whiteness of untrampled snow,
As winter ends Spring has sprung,
The animals fill the fresh air in their lungs,
The sunlight gleams through the tall trees,
Through the leaves that shine bright green.
While civilization is far from sight,
These woods remain untouched,
Far away from any humans,
These woods remain unseen

Growth as a Poet
John White
During this poetry project, the perspective I have communicated has definitely changed and improved as I proceeded through all of my drafts. At the beginning of this project, I did not know how to write poetry very well, but as the project proceeded I became better and progressed on my knowledge of poetry. By my first draft, I was clear on how to write poetry but did not quite know all of the poetic techniques. By my final draft, I knew how to use many of these techniques, which highly improved my poem and knowledge of poetry. For example, in my first poem, my stanzas did not flow very smoothly and my message did not make much sense, but my final poem flows much better and is easier to understand. This was one of several changes and improvements I made through poetic techniques.
Other changes and improvements I made to my poem was my usage of words and phrases. For example, one of the lines in the first stanza in my first draft was, “the only feeling was the cold winter freeze.” In my final draft I changed it to, “the only sensation that could be felt was the cold winter freeze.” I changed other lines in my poem and, by doing so, it made my poem turn out much better. The reason why this improved my poem was because better usage of words made my poem flow better and give more visuals. I also feel like these changes improved the emotional message of my poem. The emotional message changed because before some of my lines did not bring up much clear emotional thoughts or visuals. For example, I changed the second line on my first stanza from “white snow covered the mountains and fields” to the metaphor “a soft blanket of white snow covered the mountains and fields” which brings out much more of an emotional view than than my original line. This poetic technique improved my poem.
Two other poetic techniques that I used to improve my poem were rhyming words and simile. When I read my poem at the beginning it did not flow as well because it did not have enough rhyming words. After I added words that rhyme, it sounded much better and clearer than before. An example of this technique is found in the third stanza of my poem in the lines, “As winter ends spring has sprung, all the animals fill the fresh air in their lungs.” I believe making parts of my poem rhyme made the poem flow better than before. I also used simile in my poem. The first line of the second stanza says, “The tall trees stood lifeless like frozen statues.” As a result of all the changes and improvements made to my poem, I definitely grew as a poet.

Socialization and Identity Project
This project was on socialization and how you were socialized. The meaning of this project was to create a mask and essay on how you were socialized. This is what this project was for.
Socialization Essay
One of the most important things readers need to know is the positives and negatives of norms, identity categories, and stereotypes. The question I strive to answer is how has my culture socialized me? Has it socialized me in mostly positive ways, or mostly negative ways? I have been socialised to view people and myself in certain ways. For example, I view people in different ways including how they act, or how they act towards me. If they treat me with respect I view them as a positive person that I can hang out with. If they are negative towards me, I will most likely be negative towards them and avoid them. I also view myself in positive and negative ways. If I mess up on something I feel angry, or that I'm not good at accomplishing the task. If I do something well I feel confident and proud of myself.
One of the things I feel like I have to follow is the man box. The man box is a box of ideas that represents how a man should act. Some of the ideas in the man box are don't cry, be athletic, be tough etc:. All men are expected to follow this box and most of them do. For example, in a Ted talk by Tony Porter, he mentions how when his son cries he says “go sit down, get yourself together, and come back and talk to me when you can talk to me like a man”. Another line Tony Porter mentioned how he was with a man in a limousine. When two women got out, the man started crying. Porter then realized he had buried his teenage son 10 minutes ago, and rode 5 minutes in the limo without even showing emotion. Even I feel like I have to follow some of the rules in the man box. I feel like I can’t cry when I’m physically or emotionally hurt. That is how the man box has socialized me from a very young age.
I have been socialized through media and stereotypes to think that I have to follow social norms which is a good thing, but also to follow the man box which does have good things, but also has things that are not right, and not a good way to be socialized. Stereotypes does not mean a good thing. In fact, a lot of stereotypes are very unreasonable. One of the stereotypes that is unreasonable is that women have to look a certain way and that men have to be athletic. On the other hand, social norms are a good thing to follow. A social norm is something that influences how humans act. Examples of social norms are shaking someone's hand or stopping at a stop sign. In conclusion, social norms are something we should all follow, but stereotypes are something we should not get too stuck on following.
I have seen on tv, movies, and in public why my race is how it is and why we follow norms and stereotypes. In my race, our socialization is well represented in positive and negative ways. One of the positive ways our society is represented is how we are a very social culture, and we care about our socialization process. But there are also negative things about our culture. An example of something negative is how we use technology and how we act. In a lot of cultures, social networks and stereotypes that we follow would be an outrage in their society. This paragraph shows how we act as a culture, and why there are so many positives and negatives about it.
I am a person that has been raised in an middle class family. As a result I am able to do sports, have extra stuff, and go to college which is a good way to live. In the lower class people don't get an opportunity to do this stuff. Most of them don't get to go to college. In fact some of the lower class are so poor that they are down to pocket change, or even homeless. Payment standards are a problem in our society. For example, A lawyer would receive a higher payment even though construction workers work harder and are the reason why we have homes. This is why our society has an of balanced payment rait. Personally I think we should raise the minimum wage. For me growing up in the middle class has given me good opportunities to play sports go to college and have a successful future.
In this paragraph I will explain how my mask shows my identity, how I have been socialized and what I enjoy doing. My mask is a representation of who I am. It represents the two sides of me. On one side of my mask I have an American flag, a Colorado flag, and other designs. I included the American flag because it is a representation of our country and our culture. The reason I chose the Colorado flag was because a cultural norm in our state is to be outdoorsy. Because I was born in Colorado I was given opportunities to do sports such as mountain biking, climbing, and skiing. Another side represents how I like the outdoors. That is why there are snow capped mountains. I thought of this idea because it would be a cool way to express myself. Also having two sides could describe more information on what I like to do. That is how I came up with the idea of a double sided mask representing the two things I like.
Project Reflection
Socialization Project Reflection Questions.
John White
1 I am most proud of how well my mask turned out in terms of appearance and how it represents me. The reason why I am most proud of this concept is because it shows who I am and how my culture functions. Also I am proud of the fact that I made my made my mask in the way I thought was best. At first I was stuck on what to do with my mask, then I decided to do the two sides of me which turned out to be a good finished product. That is what I am most proud of.
2 Am I socialized in mostly good ways, or mostly bad ways, the question I strive to answer. This is the quote I am most proud of because it shows how I have been socialized. It also states a question every american should think about. This is why I am most proud of this quote.
3 The part of this project I will remember most is the making of my mask. The reason why I will remember this the most is because it is a souvenir on my AHS experience it will always remind me of when I was a freshman and why this mask making project was so important. In conclusion, this paragraph states why I will remember the mask making concept the most.
4 I want to share the message that explains how my mask represents my culture and what I like to do. I want to display this message publicly because I want people to know that my mask represents who I am. I will share this knowledge by putting this knowledge on my dp. That is what I want to do to display this message to the community.

Happiness: The The Key Emotion John White
Human happiness is an essential skill and emotion that man has developed for centuries to socialize and communicate with each other for entertainment. To achieve a society where everyone lives a happy life, we must all work as a team and realize that all of our lives matter, connect to each other and work hard to be successful and happy.
Happiness is an emotion ,when one feels pleasure maybe because they have money or they are not worried about anything, just relaxed. If someone is not happy, it doesn't mean they have an unhappy life, it could be as simple as losing your pencil. This isn't always the case, Sometimes the lack of happiness could lead to much more serious cases like depression or even suicide. This is why it is so important for us to be happy and work hard for for happiness.
Meaning plays a big role and is very important in our society in order to make us feel happy. It is not uncommon for us to view ourselves negatively or as unimportant which can cause us to feel depressed. This is just how we naturally function. However, if we view ourselves in a positive way and realize our lives have meaning, we are very likely to succeed and live a good happy life. For years scientist have studied and proven that people that view themselves in a positive way are more happy and more likely to succeed. Not only can we find happiness because of what we do, but also in other people. For example, if we give something to another person, and they are thankful and happy for it, it automatically makes you feel happy for them. You do not have to have everything to make you happy, all you need to do is be positive and you will have guaranteed happiness.
To work towards achieving happiness we must effectively work together as a team to be successful and become happy. According to a story on NPR, “feeling isolated is also dangerous and it can be fatal.” For generations humans have interacted with each other to be happy because we are social beings. Interacting with each other is something we have to work for but it is worth it to feel happy. NPR also reports, “friends are key to our survival, not just emotionally but biologically.” The reason why humans do so well and are successful is because we know how to work and interact to complete tasks. If we just ignored each other and did not work together, we would not have houses to live in. Everything we have does not create itself, people have to work together to create things which is why we are so successful.
Although many people are wealthy and have all the luxuries you can think of, it doesn't mean they are any happier. A study done by Michael Norton found that, “wealthy individuals - whether worth $1 million or 10 million - are not happier as their wealth increases.” Surprisingly people that have a budget of 50 million dollars are not much happier than people with a budget of 50 thousand dollars. This is the case because middle class people find that they have everything they need to live and a few things they want which make them happy. Whereas wealthy people do not find much more satisfaction with all their luxuries. My opinion is that we can definitely achieve a happy nation if we just stay positive and work hard. This shows that you do not have to have everything to be happy. It is always okay to do what you enjoy, not buy everything to be happy.
Happiness is one of the most critical parts of the human spirit, which is why we should examine it very closely. However, many people are not happy, but are depressed. This can result from loneliness, too much work, not enough money, and depression. Currently there is a high depression and suicide rate. According to the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and the rate has increased since 2005. This is why we need to examine happiness more often so we can come up with techniques to lower the suicide and depression rates. I think this is something we can prevent if we come up with ways to lower how much some people have to work and build more suicide prevention centers. As you have seen, human happiness is a very important part of our lives but it is also something we don't get enough of which is why we need to work hard and stay positive to be happy and successful.

Happiness project reflection
During this project we learned a lot about happiness and how it affects us and others. I feel like I grew as a student in many ways while doing this project. At first, I did not think happiness was a very complex emotion, and did not think much about it. When I was done with the project I realized how important happiness is and how it affects people. Another thing that helped me grow was how humans can achieve happiness. Once again before we did the project, I thought like most people could just use money to buy happiness, but then I realized that you could find happiness by staying positive, or finding meaning in your life. That is how this project has helped me grow as a student.
This summer I plan to be more positive about what I do so I can be happier. I think this will make me happier because I sometimes want to do what I want to do. However this can sometimes make me unhappy because I can't always do what I want. If I can go with the flow and do what other people want, I think I will definitely be happier. That is how I plan to make my summer happier.
My biggest takeaway from this project was how much happiness and depression can affect you. I found out that a surprising number of people who are depressed think about committing suicide or do commit suicide. On the other hand people can find a lot of happiness without having to use money. In fact, people who have budget of 50 thousand dollars are as happy as people with a budget of 50 million. In conclusion I think this is what is most important about this project, and my biggest take away.

Happiness Project Artist Quote and Statement
John White
Artist Quote:
Pure happiness is gliding through fresh powder on a crisp winter morning.
Artist Statement:
During the Happiness Project, we were assigned to make an art piece of our choice to represent happiness. I decided to make a poster called, The Happiness Bucket. The purpose of this was to create two sections. The bottom section contains pictures and quotes about ideas and events that are unhappy including suicide and depression. For example, one of the pictures used a map of the United States to show the number of suicide deaths of 15 - 24 year olds. On the other hand, the top contains pictures and quotes involving happy events and ideas that can improve happiness. For example, I included pictures of people doing sports and quotes about teamwork. I created the project like this to present the idea that you should try to fill up your bucket with more happy thoughts and events than unhappy thoughts or events. The bucket represents your life and your thoughts. Once again, I chose this as my art piece to create a visual of how thoughts can impact you and why it is important to realize that.
